The Soviet Tape is a new collaboration between Fulgeance & DJ Scientist. Their debut single 'Moscow Nightlife' is the perfect introduction to their sound: heavy instrumental hip hop culled exclusively from Scientist's un-rivalled collection of vintage Soviet-era records. Scientist, one of Germany's most prolific record collectors (check out his incredible 'Soviet Grooves' mix for Solid Steel) dug out a slew of samples from his archives, enlisting Fulgeance (MPC virtuoso and one half of Souleance) who transformed the source material into a truly unique and original album.

Taking forgotten records from Russia to Moldavia, The Ukraine, Georgia, Lithuania, Latvia and beyond, the duo have interspersed the largely instrumental album with skits culled from 60s CIA documentaries as well as vocal cuts featuring Blu, Open Mike Eagle and DistantStarr. This all adds up to a release that is both a throwback to the uncertain times of the Cold War and a tribute to the great depth of music that the former Union was responsible for. Standout tracks include the aforementioned 'Moscow Nightlife', the synth-heavy menace of 'Vendetta', and DistantStarr's laid-back rhymes on 'You Know'. With high-concept artwork from Emile Sacre, taking it's cue from original Soviet records, the album is in turns jazzy, psychedelic and soulful, but with hip hop at it's core.

First Word Records delivers some late summer heat with the first release by newly formed duo of French producer Fulgeance and DJ Scientist from Berlin.

Scientist is renowned as one of Germany’s most prolific record collectors, as anyone who heard his 2013 mix of 70s Soviet Grooves for Ninja Tune’s Solid Steel will testify. Trawling through his extensive collection he dug out a haul of rare samples for Fulgeance, MPC virtuoso and one half of Souleance, who transformed the source material into one of the most exciting projects on our label so far: 'The Soviet Tape'.

'Moscow Nightlife' is the first single from the album, paired with two other tracks aimed squarely at the DJs and the diggers. Built on an incredibly catchy sample it is a definite winner on the dance floor. 'Imperialist Monsters' delivers even more heat and is based on a jazzy Latvian Pop Rock recording. Spiced with thrilling vocals from an old anti-Russian CIA documentary it blends light and dark with an ease that is a trademark of the full album.
Finally, on the flip side (and exclusive to this EP) 'Caucasian Wolf Dance' is another DJ-friendly funky Hip-Hop track that mixes traditional Georgian vocal flavours with Fulgeance’s fat beats.

On Side A, DJ Scientist sets the pace with "Anything About Nothing" - a disturbing mix of hard hitting organic drums and desperately screaming psychedelica samples. Ceschi and DJ Scientist initially connected around 2005 over a mutual adoration of rare 60s/70s psychedelic, prog and folk rock as well as 90s hip hop. On their first record together, "The One Man Band Broke Up", both gentlemen evoke their influences creating a completely original sounding, melodic, dark and unabashedly progressive hip hop concept album. Based around the ever revisited topic of the rise and fall of a musician, in this case one named Julius and The Bearded Saviour, "The One Man Band Broke Up" is as much about Ceschi's own fear of failure as it is about personal experiences in a dog eat dog music industry. As Ceschi's voice moves from meticulous almost mathematical rhythms to aggressive nearly punk howling to scat like rhymes, Scientist layers epic montages of samples, dynamic drums, along with chopped live instruments to compliment the diversity of styles. Friends including Sole, Astronautalis, Radical Face (of Electric President), 2econd Class Citizen, Cars & Trains and Mic King also contribute instrumentation and vocals. The combined outcome is a post-modern hip hop project unlike anything else the two musicians have previously released.

"Shorted Circuits" is an ode to Ceschi's grandmother while "Black and White and Red All Over" features his story of growing up as a Catholic school boy." Lastly, the title track from "The One Man Band Broke Up" got reworked by The Raincoatman to a stunning alternative rock track.
